This weather system, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting toward the northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to hit the coast by Tuesday, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Alerts of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been released as the hurricane generates up to 30 inches of rain and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been advised.

Melissa is the 13th hurricane in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Residents are being told to protect their properties with protective bags and plywood sheets, and to gather essentials.

Alerts are also active for parts of the neighboring country such as the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Mudslides presently generated by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to emergency services.

This weather system is projected to pass over Cuba by midweek before moving through the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean.
