Mystery Magenta Ooze on Secluded Tasmanian Coast Raises Fears of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a rosy sludge that has appeared on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Widespread Presence On Shore
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a section of Randalls Bay about 60km south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been noted on parts of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens Collected for Examination
Specimens have been gathered and provided to the environmental agency for testing. A spokesperson stated that "algal blooms are a natural event in response to changes in nutrients, temperature, rainfall or illumination".
"They are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can change the water crimson," the spokesperson added. "Only some algae outbreaks are harmful, with numerous types serving as a key source of food for marine life in the oceanic food chain."
"The most common cause of red tides in local waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause luminous nighttime effects at night."
Rising Rate Connected to Climate Change
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their occurrence has grown in recent years, partly due to environmental shifts and contamination that combine to create mineral-filled seas ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that normally serve as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their populations that disturbs the healthy balance of marine environments.
These phenomena have been likened to underwater bushfires and can continue to grow as long as conditions are ripe. In worse situations, vulnerable aquatic environments can be destroyed as marine life is destroyed or deprived of oxygen, supplying more nutrients for the outbreak.
Recent Devastating Event in another region
A southern state not long ago grappled with a catastrophic algal bloom along its southern shore after a succession of sea temperature spikes, which spread across thousands of square kilometres. The event left surfers with sore eyes and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to a quarter-million sea creatures across hundreds of species, according to official estimates.
Expert Opinion on the Tasmanian Situation
Faith Coleman, who helped investigate the beginning of that outbreak stated, based on images of the Tasmanian outbreak, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been numerous of these events around the island of late," she said.
The scientist explained sea sparkle did not generate toxins like the organism involved in South Australia's devastating outbreak, but it does ingest small invertebrates and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were particularly vulnerable.
"It's common to observe a proliferation of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.
Appeals for Investigation and Public Safety
A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, commented it looked like the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and proposed the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, pointing to similar cases elsewhere.
"Thus we needs to issue a clear message here, the officials and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to study the specimens we've collected and we need to put word out the people here," she stated.
Henley stated she had concerns for public safety after experiencing a numbness along her arms and face while being splashed with contaminated seawater.
Accounts of Dead Marine Life and Appeals for Official Action
An environmental foundation has documented deceased sea creatures and deceased marine life washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist calling the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and calling on the local leader to inspect and "take control the reaction that officials must be undertaking".
"Officials needs to understand this is a disaster in the happening, financially as well as ecologically."
Official Statement
Talking with the media, the official commented he was did not know of any links between the event and the farming business, saying scientific testing was necessary before determinations could be made.
"We need to ensure our aquatic environments are environmentally safe and viable," he said.
"Numerous shorelines across Tasmania are our resources and we need to ensure the community and our industry can coexist to use our aquatic resources productively and sustainably."
